Use It or Lose It: The Key to Staying Sharp in Business

As business owners and entrepreneurs, we spend a lot of time working to grow our businesses, develop strategies, and stay ahead of the competition. But how often do we take a step back and apply the same principles to ourselves? This past week, I had a powerful reminder of the importance of staying active—not just physically but mentally and professionally as well.

A few weeks ago, I had a medical procedure on my shoulder. At the time, I could barely move my arm without pain. Fast forward to my latest visit with the consultant, and my range of movement has significantly improved. But here’s the kicker—this improvement didn’t just happen on its own. I had to put in the work. Daily physio exercises, consistency, and commitment made all the difference. And this got me thinking: the same principle applies to business. If you don’t use it, you lose it.

So today, I want to share three crucial areas where we need to stay sharp—both for ourselves and for our businesses.

1. Physical Mobility: Move Your Body, Move Your Business

As business owners, we often get stuck behind our desks for hours on end. Meetings, emails, and strategy sessions keep us glued to our chairs, and before we know it, we’re stiff, sluggish, and drained. Just like my shoulder needed movement to regain its function, our bodies need activity to stay energised.

Make it a priority to incorporate movement into your daily routine. It doesn’t have to be a full workout session. It could be a quick walk, stretching, or even a standing desk setup. The goal is to keep the body moving because when the body is active, the mind follows. I’ve realised that the more I move, the more creative and productive I become. And that applies to entrepreneurs too.

2. Mental Mobility: Sharpening Skills and Staying Agile

In business, stagnation is the enemy of growth. If we don’t actively work on improving our skills, we risk becoming outdated and ineffective. Just like my shoulder exercises kept my muscles from stiffening, regular learning keeps our skills sharp and adaptable.

When was the last time you took a course, read a business book, or attended a workshop? Business trends and technology are constantly evolving, and staying ahead requires continuous learning. Set aside time every week to invest in personal development. Whether it’s enrolling in a new program, seeking mentorship, or practicing new techniques, staying mentally agile ensures you don’t fall behind. Remember, if you don’t use your skills, they become rusty and ineffective.

3. Thinking Mobility: The Power of Reflection and Rest

One of the most overlooked aspects of success is the ability to step back and think. Over the past few months, I realised I wasn’t giving myself enough time to reflect and strategise. I was constantly “doing” but not enough “thinking.” And this happens to so many entrepreneurs—they get caught in the grind without making space for creativity and innovation.

Take intentional breaks. These moments of pause aren’t wasted time; they’re essential for coming up with new ideas, solving problems, and gaining fresh perspectives. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs build reflection time into their daily routines—why shouldn’t we?

Try blocking out 15-30 minutes a day for thinking and creative exploration. Whether it’s journaling, meditation, or simply stepping away from the screen, this practice can lead to breakthroughs that propel your business forward.

Your Challenge This Week: Use It or Lose It

For the week ahead, I challenge you to take action in all three areas:

Physical mobility – Move your body daily, even if it’s just a short walk.Mental mobility – Learn something new or refine a skill.Thinking mobility – Set aside time to reflect and generate new ideas.

And don’t just do this for yourself—encourage your team to do the same. The best business leaders lead by example, and when we actively practice what we preach, we inspire those around us to do the same.

I’d love to hear how you integrate these into your routine. If you have a unique way of staying sharp—whether it’s a favorite workout, a skill-building habit, or a reflection practice—share it with me. Let’s keep each other accountable.

Remember, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Let’s make this a week of growth, action, and momentum!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Let’s thrive together.
