Navigating Business Growth: Lessons from a Roadwork Slowdown

Ever had one of those mornings where you leave in plenty of time, only to find yourself stuck in unexpected traffic? That was me today, heading to a training session. I anticipated some delays, but as I inched along the road, I realised there were lessons hidden in those frustrating moments.

And if you’re a business owner or entrepreneur, these insights might just help you navigate growth more effectively. Let’s break it down into three key takeaways: perception, momentum, and decision-making.

1. The Power of Perception: What Your Customers See Matters

As I drove, I noticed stretches of roadworks with no visible work happening. Just cones, lane closures, and a sign saying the work was for “my safety.” The logical side of me knew why—perhaps work happened at night, or perhaps they needed to keep the setup in place to save time. But the emotional side of me? Frustrated.

How often do your customers feel the same way? They might be in the middle of a purchase decision, waiting for results from your service, or trying to understand your business processes, but from their perspective, nothing seems to be happening. Maybe they’re investing time and money but not seeing immediate results.

As business owners, we need to communicate better. If customers understand why things are moving a certain way and what the long-term benefits are, they’ll be more likely to stay engaged. Clarity breeds confidence. Are you explaining the ‘why’ behind your business processes? Or are customers feeling stuck behind barriers with no clear direction?

2. Momentum Matters: Speeding Up by Slowing Down

Another thing I noticed in traffic: I was forced to slow down. From 70 mph to 60, then 50, then 40. Initially, it felt annoying. But then I realised—this wasn’t just random. It was a controlled way to keep the overall flow moving and avoid complete standstills or accidents.

The same principle applies to business growth. Sometimes, rushing ahead leads to burnout, mistakes, or bottlenecks. If you’re constantly pushing forward at full speed, you may be setting yourself up for unnecessary stops. Instead, strategic slowdowns—pausing to refine processes, assess results, and adjust course—can actually keep momentum consistent.

Ask yourself: Where in your business do you need to slow down to keep moving forward? Is there a process that needs refining? A team that needs better training before scaling? Controlled speed adjustments prevent breakdowns and keep your business running smoothly.

3. The Customer Journey: Are You Putting Up Too Many Detours?

Finally, as I sat in traffic, I thought about how these roadworks impacted my overall journey. Were the detours necessary? Absolutely. But did they make me question whether I should take another route next time? Yes.

This is exactly what happens in business. If you create too many unnecessary steps or roadblocks for customers—overcomplicated onboarding, unclear processes, excessive hoops to jump through—you risk losing them. They’ll start wondering if there’s a simpler, smoother alternative.

Think about your customer experience. Are you unintentionally making it hard for people to buy from you? Are you adding extra layers that don’t actually add value? Every touchpoint in their journey should be purposeful, not just another detour.

Keeping Your Business on the Right Track

So, here’s my challenge to you as a business owner:How can you shift your customers’ perception so they understand and trust your process?Where in your business can you slow down in order to speed up?Are there unnecessary roadblocks in your customer experience that need to be removed?

Growth isn’t always about going full throttle. Sometimes, it’s about navigating the journey more effectively. If you’d like to explore this further, let’s chat. I’d be happy to help you find at least one insight that keeps your business on track.
